Can you believe summer is almost over!? I can’t, those sweet, sweet days of summer always seem to come and go too fast.
With everyone’s busy schedules and hustle and bustle it can be hard to stay in the moment. The current state of society’s over connectivity and focus on everyone else’s highlight reel, not only takes away from your own, but can send you down a classic “grass is greener” or “not doing enough” spiral. I have fallen into that trap many times myself, and I have a feeling I am not alone.
Here’s the thing, we know WAY too much. We aren’t supposed to have access to all of this information. We aren’t meant to know everyone’s thoughts and opinions, everything they are doing in a day, or whether or not what you are doing is worthy of attention. It seems that the more we know, the more “connected” we are, the more divided we seem to become—and the more insecure we feel. (That insecurity leading the way if you ask me.)
We’re not meant to feel obligated to instantly respond to others’ texts, calls, or emails. We were never meant to be accessible to others every hour of every day. Our focus is getting pulled in a thousand different directions at one time, making it impossible to pick a lane and give your full attention to it. It makes it hard to see -decide even- what matters most to you, what you truly want, and the amazing life you have in front of you.
Maybe you are reading this thinking, “Megg, why are you jibber jabbering about my feelings and attention span?” Well, because you are a rockstar! And I don’t want you to forget it.
Your time, attention, and focus on the things that matter to you is yours and yours alone to give. Sometimes we subconsciously get too focused on the “wrong” things and it takes away from how we see ourselves. It makes us forget why we are here, the person we are striving to be, and the accomplishments and opportunities we have in front of us.
This walk around the block started because I wanted to remind you to soak up these sun-shiney and warm days. To put the phone away and unplug. But really, I want to remind you that our world comes with a lot of noise. Noise that is not meant for you. It is not something to focus on, live up to, or use as a benchmark. The only benchmark you need is the person you truly want to be in this world. How you want to show up, the values you want to uphold, and the goals you dream of most. (And maybe your 1 RM clean and jerk, cause it’s cool.)
Your focus determines your direction.
Your peace, self respect and kindness are precious.
Your soul is yours to protect.
Next time you find yourself focusing (or not focusing) on the noise, remember, it’s not meant for you. You can take a deep breath and take the pressure off. You do not have to feel obligated to give away your time or attention.
Stay in your lane, it’s taking you places you can’t even imagine.
